The Boy in the Big Collar: A Birthday Thank You

October 27, 2026
Sepia childhood studio portrait of Stephen Celestial, founder of MAIR Care Inc., as a young boy in a wide-collared shirt.

That’s Me Up There

In a shirt with a collar that could generate its own lift.

It is my birthday today, so I went digging for photographic evidence that I was once small and mildly adorable. This is the best of it.

The Kart Years

Same kid, different day. A brown suit, a public park, a red pedal kart, and the expression of a boy who has been asked to smile and has decided against it.

That was also the last stretch of my life with no opinions about hair whatsoever:

  • a full head of it
  • no razor, no clinic, no appointments
  • nothing to argue with

The opinions arrived later, and they have not let up since.

No Pitch Attached

Nothing to book here, no discount, no birthday package.

Just a thank you to everyone who has been on my table. The regulars, the nervous first-timers, the ones who drive in from out of town, and the ones who fly home to visit family and somehow still find room for an appointment.

A good number of you stopped being clients a long time ago and became friends. That is the part I never saw coming when I started this, and it is far and away the best thing this work has given me.

One day MAIR Care Inc. will close its doors, because everything does eventually. The friendships will still be here long after it is gone. I would rather have built that than a business.

You are also the reason I like Mondays, and the reason I am quite happily still working until midnight. The stories and the laughs turn that treatment room into a vacuum, and time stops behaving properly in there.

‍

Bottom Line

Another trip around the sun. Another year older, still smooth, still in the Beaches.

That boy on the kart would be completely baffled by how this turned out, and I think he would be pleased.

Back at it tomorrow.
